A truck driver was awoken by men stealing frozen seafood before being chased away from his vehicle overnight in Southwest Philly, police said.

According to police, the incident happened along the 3400 block of Island Avenue in Southwest Philly, at about 4:57 a.m. on Tuesday, when a driver — who was sleeping in a cargo truck parked along the roadway — was awoken to the sounds of movement in his truck.

When the driver checked outside, he told police that he saw six men removing boxes of snow crabs from the rear of the truck.

The driver then exited the vehicle to confront the thieves, but, officials said, he was chased away from the truck by the men robbing the vehicle.

Police said the thieves made off with two pallets of frozen snow crab — or 50 boxes that weighed about 30 pounds a piece — for a total of 3,000 pounds of stolen crab.

Following the crime, the six thieves fled from the area in several vehicles, including a gray Ford F-150 and a gray Dodge Caravan.

Police described one of the thieves as a man who stood about 5-foot, 8-inches tall and was wearing all black clothing at the time the crime occurred.

Another individual involved in the theft was described by police at standing about 5-foot, 6-inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds. He too wore all black clothing when this incident occurred.

An investigation into this incident is ongoing.
