A 14-year-old boy was detained and sent to a juvenile detention facility after a social media post that referenced a terrorist threat against a high school, the Eagle Pass Police Department said Tuesday.
A concerned parent contacted police about the post, which involved a student at Eagle Pass Junior High School, according to the department. The post reportedly mentioned a terrorist threat against the school.
Investigators began working to identify who was responsible and to assess the potential danger to students, faculty and staff, police said.
Officers identified the child and obtained a home address. The boy was detained and taken to the police department for further investigation, according to the release.
Police did not release his name because he is a child.
“The Eagle Pass Police Department takes all threats involving our schools, students and educational personnel extremely seriously,” the release said. “Threatening behavior of this nature will not be tolerated.”
Police said social media posts that depict firearms or reference acts of violence against schools can cause significant fear and disruption in the community, whether or not they are intended as a joke.
“If you see something, say something,” the release said, asking that any threats be reported immediately to law enforcement or school authorities.
Anyone with information can reach the Eagle Pass Police Department at 830-773-9044.
